Criminal Justice, Associate - Emphasis on Corporate Security & Public Safety

The Criminal Justice degree (A.S.) program in El Cajon is designed to prepare graduates for entry into state, local, or federal law enforcement, corrections, or private security. Students will study the U.S. Constitution, American court systems, Federal and California state laws, and past and current criminal trends. Students will be prepared to properly articulate, format, and complete various reports and professional communication. Before graduation, students will be introduced to the application process for various local, state, and federal agencies.

The Associate of Science is available in four emphasis areas and builds upon the Criminal Justice & Public Safety program. Students must choose one emphasis path in either Criminal Investigations, Corrections, Homeland Security, or Corporate Security & Public Safety.

An associate degree in corporate security and public safety is a program that equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work in security and public safety. The program covers security management, emergency response, risk assessment, crime prevention, and counter-terrorism.

Students are trained to identify potential security breaches and to develop strategies to prevent or mitigate them. They learn to analyze security threats, develop security plans, and implement security measures to protect corporate assets, employees, and the public.

  • Communication skills. Police and detectives must be able to speak with people when gathering facts about a crime and to express details about a given incident in writing.
  • Empathy. Police officers need to understand the perspectives of a wide variety of people in their jurisdiction and have a willingness to help the public.
  • Good judgment. Police and detectives must be able to determine the best way to solve a wide array of problems quickly.
  • Leadership skills. Police officers must be comfortable with being a highly visible members of their community, as the public looks to them for assistance in emergency situations.
  • Perceptiveness. Officers, detectives, and fish and game wardens must anticipate a person’s reactions and understand why people act a certain way.
  • Physical stamina. Officers and detectives must be in good physical shape to pass the required tests for entry into the field and to keep up with the daily rigors of the job.
  • Physical strength. Police officers must be strong enough to apprehend offenders physically.

After completing the 9-month Criminal Justice and Public Safety diploma program at ATA College, students can continue with courses in the Associate of Science program. The Associate of Science in Criminal Justice is available in multiple emphasis pathways and can be completed in an additional six months after general education courses.

Upon graduation, you can work in homeland security, corrections, corporate security, crime scene investigations, and more. ATA College has an Educational Alliance with Grand Canyon University for students completing this associate degree program successfully. ATA College Graduates can transfer their credits and receive a 10% off Scholarship towards GCU tuition.

  • Part 1 – Weapons of Mass Destruction, Powers to Arrest, Live Scan, State Forms, Test, and Diploma/Certificate of Completion.
  • Part 2 – To be completed within 30 days of receiving Guard Card. Public relations, Observation and Documentation, Communications, Liability, and Legal Aspects.
  • Part 3 – To be completed within six months of receiving your guard card. Difficult people, workplace violence, officer survival, handcuffing, incident scene, courtroom testimony, arrest/search, report writing.
  • BSIS Firearms – Testing, state forms, live scan, range qualification and training, ammunition, range fees.
  • Firearms Qualifications – Qualifications must be completed quarterly/twice per year, along with a firearms refresher. Ammunition, written test, range qualifications, and fees, ammunition.
  • BSIS Baton – PR/24, expandable baton, straight stick. State card and certificate issued.
  • BSIS Tear Gas – Case, permit, a canister of tear gas, card, and certificate.
  • Taser – Case, permit, two live rounds, certificate, and card.
  • Basic Life Support – American Heart Association. AED training included tests, cards, and a student manual.
  • TECC – Tactical Emergency Casualty Care for law enforcement and first responders

This growth rate is slightly higher than the average for all occupations, indicating a strong demand for individuals trained in law enforcement, corrections, and criminal investigation.
