What Do HVAC Technicians Do?

HVAC technicians manage heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and refrigeration systems to control temperature and air quality, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. HVAC technicians work in residences and commercial buildings to install and maintain HVAC systems. They inspect, diagnose, and repair components and HVAC parts that are worn or defective. HVAC technicians demonstrate good communication with customers, vendors, and supervisors. They are problem solvers and need to prioritize their efforts to manage customer expectations and repair HVAC systems to full working order.

Was HVAC Impacted by COVID-19?

Every industry was impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the HVAC technology sector only experienced minimal impacts. Despite the economic downturn COVID-19 caused, it remained critical that residences and businesses were able to maintain properly functioning HVAC systems and commercial refrigeration equipment. While HVAC equipment is important for providing comfort, it is vital for health and safety. Small particles of disease can remain airborne for some period of time, but well-designed HVAC systems provide necessary air filtration and can minimize the spread of airborne disease. Commercial refrigeration equipment is absolutely critical for food and medical supply preservation. If and when equipment does fail, it is imperative HVAC/R technicians are able to respond to calls to repair or replace it as quickly as possible.

Are HVAC Technicians Essential Workers?

In March 2020, during the earliest stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designated HVAC industry employees among “Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers During the COVID-19 Response.” As the skilled workers who install, maintain, inspect, and repair heating, air conditioning, and ventilation systems, HVAC technicians are essential because their services are necessary for ensuring continuity of building functions and maintaining the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences. Even amidst a global pandemic, demand never decreased for these critically important services, and as essential infrastructure workers, HVAC/R technicians remained at work providing critical repairs.
