Every industry was impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the HVAC technology sector only experienced minimal impacts. Despite the economic downturn COVID-19 caused, it remained critical that residences and businesses were able to maintain properly functioning HVAC systems and commercial refrigeration equipment. While HVAC equipment is important for providing comfort, it is vital for health and safety. Small particles of disease can remain airborne for some period of time, but well-designed HVAC systems provide necessary air filtration and can minimize the spread of airborne disease. Commercial refrigeration equipment is absolutely critical for food and medical supply preservation. If and when equipment does fail, it is imperative HVAC/R technicians are able to respond to calls to repair or replace it as quickly as possible.
In March 2020, during the earliest stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) designated HVAC industry employees among “Essential Critical Infrastructure Workers During the COVID-19 Response.” As the skilled workers who install, maintain, inspect, and repair heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems, HVAC technicians are essential because their services are necessary for ensuring continuity of building functions and maintaining the safety, sanitation, and essential operation of residences. Even amidst a global pandemic, demand never decreased for these critically important services, and as essential infrastructure workers, HVAC/R technicians remained at work providing critical repairs.
In response to the growing nationwide need for skilled HVAC technicians, ATA College added new HVAC Technician training programs. ATA’s HVAC Technician training programs are designed to prepare graduates for entry-level positions as Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and/or Installers through relevant classroom instruction and hands-on technical skills training. At ATA, you can choose between two programs: the 10-week HVAC I program is designed for students who already have prior industry experience, while the 40-week HVAC II program is for students who are just entering the field. The HVAC II program includes a 5-week externship course, in which students can apply their skills with practical experience in the field.
Graduates of ATA’s HVAC Technician training programs will be prepared to test for the EPA 608 Universal Certification, a nationally-recognized industry certification, and are prepared to immediately enter the workforce and begin entry-level careers as HVAC technicians. Training programs at ATA are designed to be as flexible and achievable as possible, and each of ATA’s HVAC training programs are offered in both hybrid-online and in-person formats. ATA’s hybrid-online classes enable students to complete the majority of the coursework online, while receiving hands-on skills training through regularly scheduled on-campus labs.
